DRAVYAGUNA VIGYAN (AYURVEDA PHARMACOLOGY)

Dravyaguna vigyana is the branch of Ayurveda which give scientific information about herbs & Ayurveda formulations including their nature, nomenclature, properties & pharmacological actions. This science specifically deals with pharmacognosy, pharmacology, therapeutic utility and relation between actions and properties of Ayurveda drugs.

Literal meaning of word Dravya means material or things and Guna means properties, thus Dravyaguna Vigyan deals around properties of Dravya (drugs). Dravyaguna Vigyan relates pharmacological actions with Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipak and Prabhav of drugs.

Key points about Dravyaguna Vigyan:

Understanding drug action: By analyzing the “gunas” (qualities) of a substance, Dravyaguna helps practitioners understand how a particular herb will interact with the body and which conditions it is best suited for.

Clinical application: The knowledge gained from Dravyaguna is crucial for selecting the right herbal remedies to treat specific diseases based on a patient’s individual constitution and symptoms.

Quality control: It also emphasizes the importance of identifying and procuring high-quality medicinal plants to ensure the efficacy of Ayurvedic treatments

Objective:

The objective of “Dravyaguna Vigyan” is

• to comprehensively study the properties, actions, and therapeutic applications of medicinal plants and substances used in Ayurveda,
• providing a deep understanding of their qualities (like rasa, guna, virya, vipaka, and prabhava) to enable the appropriate selection and application of herbal medicines in clinical practice, essentially forming the foundation for Ayurvedic treatment decisions.

Departmental Features – Department has a well developed medicinal plant garden (having around 250 medicinal plant species) and raw drug museum also (having around 250 crude drug samples), which are crucial for identification of the medicinal plants. Department also have pharmacognosy lab in which students perform different pharmacognostical tests of different medicinal plants.
